Six Divisional team’s franchise ownership was finalised in a bidding programe held at a local hotel in the city on Tuesday to start the money-spinning Bangladesh Premier League’s (BPL) journey formally.
Though BPL governing body planned to organise the programme in colorful mood, it was cut short finally due to the sad demise of BCB Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Manzur Ahmed, who died of cardiac arrest on Tuesday morning. One minute silence was observed ahead of the programme in remembrance of Manzur Ahmed.
However the drama and suspense which was predicted was entirely absent since the franchises were allegedly reached the mutual understanding before the bidding programme.
Sources said all names were finalised before the programme albeit no concerned person of BPL governing body and Game On Sports Management, an India based company, admitted it.
A total of nine companies took part in the bidding process. Apart from Alif Group, all companies bided for more than one team.
Alif Group (International Sports Holding Limited) eventually owned the Barisal Division offering an amount of US$ 1.01 million. Southern Group was the other bidders for Barisal which offered US$ 0.90 million albeit the floor price was set US$ 1 million.
Chittagong Division got the highest amount when S.Q Sports owned it with a whopping US$ 1.20 million. Pearl Trading and Digital Auto Care bided US$ 1.05 and 1 million for the port city.
Khulna got the next highest rate as Orion Group bought the team with US$ 1.10 million bettering the effort of Southern (1.03 million) and Perl (1.02 million).
Rjashahi was bought with an amount of US$ 1.07 million which the Digital Auto Care offered. Euro Impax with US$ 1.05 and Pearl Trading with US$ 1.02 million were their contenders.
Walton got the rights of Sylhet Division as they bought it with an amount of US$ 1.06 million outclassing Europa Group (1.03 million) and Southern Group (1.02 million). Foreign investors of India and Sri Lanka will assist them, said Walton director Mijanur Rahman.
Europa Group owned Dhaka Division with an amount of US$ 1.05 million for which they had to battle with Digital Auto Care and Euro Impax. Both of them offered US$ 1 million for the team.
Digital Auto Care looked very organized as they outlined about their team even before buying Rajshahi Division. Once they got the rights of the team, the chairman Touhidur Rahman Mohon named Rajshahi as Rajshahi Warriors and introduced the team’s chief adviser and team manager.
Former national opener Athar Ali Khan was appointed as the chief adviser while former skipper Faruk Ahmed will act as team manager. Rajshahi also considered local hero Khaled Mashud Pilot and former Bangladesh fielding coach Salahuddin as the two coaches of the team.
“We’ll try to form a good team with buying out some quality foreign players. Chairman handed us all power to form a balanced team and provided the fund already. If needed we we’ll recruit foreign coach as well,” Rajshahi team manager Faruk Ahmed said.
Dhaka Division appointed Habibul Bashar Sumon as their chief consultant while Chittagong branded their team’s name as Chittagong Tigers.
“BCB CEO Manzur Ahmed was our very close person. We are shocked at his sad demise. We’ll tell you about our team’s structure next time,” Ali Ahsan Mahbub, the concern person of Chittagong Franchise said.
The rest of the teams however did not disclose anything about their team structure. The teams will collect their partner to enrich their fund.
Franchise of the Khulna was delighted to get the rights as they vowed to promote some young players of Khulna during the BPL.
“We got Shakib Al Hasan, the world’s best all-rounder, as our icon player. He has the name and fame to be advertisement of the team. We also want to enrich our foreign collection by buying some quality players. In addition, we’ll promote some young players of Khulna during the BPL,” the concerned person of Khulna franchise Tanvirul Islam Kamrul said. “We know there is no lack of talented players in Khulna.”
Dhaka franchise Europa Group’s official Shihab Hasan Chowdhury also vowed to form the team with high profile players while Azizur Rahman, the chief of Barisal Franchise Alif Group aimed to play good cricket to enhance the name and fame of Bangladesh cricket.
BPL event management group Game On has already earned US$ 6.5 million (Tk. 52 crore) by buying the teams.
