The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) franchisees confirmed that the Pakistani players would not pull them out from the tournament albeit the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) threatened to bar the players from the second edition of the money-spinning tournament as an immediate consequence of the Bangladesh’s decision to shelve the Pakistan tour. At least two franchisees- Dhaka Gladiators and Duronto Rajshahi said their Pakistani players assured them to play the league, scheduled to be kicked off on January 18.

“Shahid Afridi is only one Pakistani player in our team and we contacted him after BCB put the Pakistan tour on hold. He confirmed us that he is coming to play,” Selim Chowdhury, the owner of Dhaka Gladiators told the reporters on Tuesday.

Duronto Rajshahi chairman Mushfiqur Rahman Mohan also was assured by his team’s Pakistani players.
Rajshahi purchased four Pakistani players- Abdul Razzak, Mohammad Sami, Shahjaib Hossain and Khalid Latif during the players’ auction on December 20.

Mohan said, “Our Pakistani players ensured us that they would play the tournament. Even Abdul Razzak will come into my office tomorrow (Wednesday) to make it sure that the Pakistani players would not shun the tournament. His presence would give a signal of Pakistani players’ intention to our sponsors as well who were worried after BCB postponed the tour.”

Mohan also informed that apart from the national contracted four players, 53 other Pakistani players who were sold out would take part in the tournament.

“It is more or less sure that the players will not cancel their participation. There was little apprehension with the four players who are under national team contract. Their participation in the tournament will depend on their board.”

Chittagong Kings on the other hand sought replacement for their two Pakistani players- Imran Nazir and Wahab Riaz.

“We have got only two Pakistani players in our squad in Imran Nazir and Wahab Riaz. Saeed Anwar Jr has been ruled out for injury. We had already informed that to BPL governing and asked for a replacement,” said Saker Quader Chowdhury, director of Chittagong Kings.

“The team balance will not be heavily affected if ultimately they don’t arrive as we will surely go for suitable replacement,” said Saker.

It is likely that Chittagong Kings will contact those two players once their owner Sameer Quader Chowdhury who is in USA now, returns to the country on January 4.

Meanwhile, the BCB is yet to get the response from the PCB after sending the letter letting them know to put the tour on hold.

“They are yet to reply our letter and yet to inform anything us officially. I don’t know whether they would release their players for the BPL,” BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon told the reporters on Tuesday.
Papon reiterated his stance of touring Pakistan in convenient time as he hoped the good rapport between the two cricketing nations would not be in jeopardy.

His comment came up in the wake of PCB President Zaka Ashraf’s threat to bar the players participating in the BPL-2.

Though the BCB president admitted that the BPL would loss its opulence if the Pakistani players backed out, he vowed to continue the tournament.

“If the star Pakistani players backed out, BPL would loss its colour but yet we’ve to finish the tournament in due time. Franchisees would have the opportunity to replace them as there were many players who remained unsold,” Papon said.

“I can’t blame them the way they reacted after we postponed the tour. If we were in their place, we’ll react the same way but I want to make them sure it was not intentional,” he said.

“We never said that we would not visit Pakistan. They would have to understand we are the victim of the situation. As we are committed, we certainly would visit Pakistan but not at this moment as the situation is not favourable. When the condition improves, we’ll tour,” the BCB boss reiterated.

The president hailed Pakistani cricketers contribution to the Bangladesh cricket.

“Pakistani cricketers enriched our cricket by playing here regularly. Our cricketers learnt many things from them. We are grateful to them.”

BPL governing council chairman Afzalur Rahman Sinha said that there would be no further players’ auction if the Pakistani players backed out. He informed the franchisees could rope in the unsold players as replacement of their Pakistani players.
