BCCI-NCA hold talks after Aus debacle

Jaipur: Stung by the debacle in Australia, the Indian cricket board (BCCI) has held discussions with the National Cricket Academy (NCA) officials in order to put in place corrective measures to avoid such humiliation in future.

Former India batsman Sandeep Patil, who is also the director of Cricket Operations at the NCA, conceded that the Indian team's dismal show in Australia is a cause of concern, but said elaborate plans have already been made to avoid such a scenario again.

"There were discussions between the BCCI and NCA, and plans were put in place but I can't divulge the details," Patil, who was here for a seminar on coaching, said.

"The NCA is more concerned about preparations for various tours and various other aspects regarding the players. We have an injury management programme in place and that is why we were able to keep fitness problems in check during the Australia tour.

"The NCA ensures that injuries, workload and fitness of the contracted players at all levels is monitored throughout the year and our recommendations and suggestions in this regard do carry weight in BCCI," he added.

The Indian team suffered its second consecutive overseas series whitewash, receiving a 4-0 pounding at the hands of Australia in the just-concluded four-Test series.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men also lost by a similar margin to England in England last year.

Patil refuted talks that NCA was following Australia's pattern for developing India's domestic structure.

"This is not true that we are following the Australian pattern. Our setup and facilities are in accordance with our country's need.

"NCA is more concerned about whether the grant given by BCCI to different state academies is utilised in proper manner or not. I have toured even the remote academies and I am happy with the talent pool and the bench strength," he said.

The former cricketer also said that the BCCI has made special plans to unearth bowling talents in the country.

"The BCCI has plans to select 30 bowlers, both medium pacers and spinners, who have not figured in any tournaments. They would be then imparted special training at the NCA," Patil said.

Patil also said that the NCA's door is always open for any injured cricketer of the country.

"The NCA is open for all cricketers. The state associations can make a request to the NCA and we would extend help in every possible manner. We have qualified physios and within minutes we can get the opinion," he said
