‘Tigers’ that brings in the scuffle
Tigers, the sobriquet that best fits the Bangladesh national cricket team, are the most sought name by the franchisees for the forthcoming Bangladesh Premier League.
At least two franchisees wanted ‘Tigers’ as part of their names which left the BPL governing council in a tricky position.
The owners of the Chittagong franchise want to name it as Chittagong Tigers while Barisal wanted that their name as Bengal Tigers Barisal.
Franchisees were given a list of 5,000 names, sent by fans through an SMS contest, to choose their names from although the final decision rests with the BPL governing council.
BPL officials said that they could chose anything but Tigers as it is now the established pet name of the national cricketers.
The official logo of the Bangladesh Cricket Board consists of a Tiger and the name of the board’s web site is tigercricket.com.
Chittagong said that they have also used the same name for the Port City Cricket League in the past and did not see any problems with using the name in the BPL.
But the BPL governing council chairman, Gazi Ashraf Hossain, cannot give them any guarantee.
‘We have asked the franchisees to propose more than one names for their team. The names that you
mentioned need to be approved by the governing council,’ he said.
‘I would not like
to say anything right now about the name of Tigers as they are our valued partners. But we will
see so that no name can create any confusion or raise any question,’ Ashraf said.
Ashraf added that they would finalise the names at a meeting today.
Before a formal approval, Rajshahi have already announced that they will unveil the logo of their franchisee, Duranto Rajshahi, today.
Dhaka would like to be called Dhaka Gladiators while Sylhet proposed the name to be Walton Fighter Sylhet. Khulna want them to be named as Khulna Royal Bengal in the competition.
